GILLIAN FORBES STONECARVER
Creating work in stone starts with an enquiry from the client where we will agree a meeting, usually at my studio, where I can take the time to guide the client through all technical aspects of stone carving by hand. Here I have a wide selection of stone samples, a complete portfolio of my previous projects and at any time there will be work in progress to view – all of which can inform and enlighten the commissioning process. We then discuss all the elements of the project including design ideas, suitability of stone type, location, scale, letterforms, carving style, timetable and cost.
After this initial discussion I develop a costed sketch design for the client to consider and for us to discuss further. When we have reached an agreement on all aspects of the job a contract is signed, and at this point the client makes an initial payment, the stone is ordered from the quarry and the job commences. On completion of the carving to the client’s satisfaction, the final payment is made. Costs vary according to the complexity of the job, for example, a small lettered house sign in slate would start around £300, a simple sandstone memorial would start around £1250, and a large detailed sculpture such as The Green Man would cost in the region of £6000.
